Swimwear Trends for Hot Destinations

5 Swimwear Styles Women Over 40 Are Loving in 2026

Swimwear shopping can feel very different after 40. Comfort, support, and flattering design start to matter just as much as colour and style. The good news? Swimwear in 2026 is designed with real women in mind.

This season’s styles combine thoughtful structure, beautiful fabrics, and silhouettes that celebrate shape rather than trying to hide it. The right swimsuit should help you feel confident, comfortable, and ready to enjoy the beach, pool, or vacation ahead.

Here are five swim styles women over 40 are loving this season — and why they work so well.

1. The Modern One-Piece

The one-piece has made a huge comeback, and today’s versions are anything but basic.

Designers are using thoughtful details to create shape and style, including:

  • subtle waist shaping

  • textured fabrics

  • square or V-necklines

  • gentle ruching through the midsection

These elements help highlight natural curves while offering coverage and support.

Style tip:
A beautiful one-piece can double as a top under linen pants or a wrap skirt for an easy beach-to-lunch look. Add a lightweight button-up shirt worn open as a layer and finish with a straw hat and oversized sunglasses.

2. High-Waisted Bikini Sets

High-waisted bikini bottoms remain one of the most popular options for women over 40.

Why they work so well:

  • offer gentle tummy coverage

  • define the waistline

  • pair easily with supportive tops

Many women also appreciate the ability to mix and match sizes for the top and bottom — something that’s harder to do with a one-piece.

The look feels modern, flattering, and a little bit retro in the best way.

Style tip:
The higher waist creates shape while the layered pieces soften the look with effortless elegance. Add wide-leg linen shorts for beachside walks, choose simple gold jewelry for a polished finish.

3. Tankinis That Actually Look Stylish

Tankinis have evolved far beyond the styles many people remember.

New designs feature:

  • soft draping fabrics

  • flattering ruching

  • longer torso coverage

  • supportive built-in bra cups

They offer the flexibility of a two-piece while providing the coverage many women appreciate.

They’re also incredibly practical — making it easier for swimming, walking the beach, or relaxing poolside.

Style tip:
Tankinis offer the flexibility of a two-piece while providing the coverage many women appreciate. Pair them with bikini bottoms, swim shorts, or skirted styles to create a flattering silhouette. Choose styles designed with bra-like support for comfortable, everyday wear—even on the warmest days.

4. Swim Dresses & Skirted Styles

Swim dresses and skirted bottoms are becoming increasingly popular for women who want a little extra coverage without sacrificing style.

Today’s designs are far more modern than older versions, featuring:

  • light flowing fabrics

  • shaping panels

  • built-in supportive suits underneath

They provide comfort while still feeling stylish and resort-ready.

Style tip:
The flowing silhouette feels relaxed and feminine, making it perfect for poolside lunches or resort patios.

5. Supportive Bikini Tops with Adjustable Fit

Support makes a huge difference in swimwear confidence.

Many 2026 styles feature thoughtful construction such as:

  • underwire support

  • adjustable straps

  • molded cups

  • wider bands for comfort

These features help provide lift and structure while maintaining a beautiful silhouette.

Style tip:
The structured top provides support while the flowing layers balance your silhouette. Enjoy beach volleyball or reading by the pool with equal confidence.

Why Swimwear Fitting Matters

One of the biggest mistakes women make when shopping for swimwear is choosing a suit without a proper fit.

Swimsuits are more like lingerie than clothing — the structure and support need to match your body.

A professional swim fitting can help you find:

  • the right cup support

  • proper torso length

  • flattering leg height

  • the best silhouettes for your shape

Often women are surprised to discover that a different style or size completely transforms how a swimsuit feels and looks. Mix and Match swim styles ensure the most flattering fit, and your confidence is the sexiest look you will wear

The right swimsuit should make you feel comfortable, supported, and ready to enjoy the water, the sunshine, and the moments that come with summer travel.

With so many thoughtful styles available today, finding that perfect suit has never been easier.

Cloud Dancer for 2026

Unlike bold colour trends from previous years, this year's hue is intentionally quiet. Representing a pause from the noise of modern life — a visual reset that invites simplicity, reflection, and effortless style.

linen and cloud dancer outfit
Pantone Colour of the Year 2026: Cloud Dancer

Pantone Colour of the Year 2026: Cloud Dancer

A soft, airy off-white that symbolizes calm, clarity, and fresh beginnings. And honestly, what colour could feel more at home in a casual resort wardrobe?

Picture the feeling of stepping off a plane somewhere warm. The air is soft, the pace slows down, and suddenly everything feels lighter. That relaxed mood is exactly what Cloud Dancer captures.

In resort wear, Cloud Dancer becomes the perfect foundation colour. Think:

  • Linen camp shirts

  • Easy cotton dresses

  • Relaxed drawstring pants

  • Lightweight knit sweaters for cool evenings

  • Tailored shorts and casual blazers

This gentle off-white isn’t stark or clinical. Instead, it has the warmth of sun-bleached linen, beach sand, and cotton shirts drying in the ocean breeze. It’s the colour of effortless travel — simple pieces that look polished without trying too hard. Quiet luxury — relaxed, refined, and endlessly versatile, and here’s why it works so well:

It reflects the sun.
Light colours stay cooler in warm climates and feel natural in bright coastal settings.

It pairs with everything.
This airy neutral works beautifully with ocean blues, tropical greens, and warm sandy tones.

It feels timeless.
White resort pieces never really go out of style. They simply evolve with new silhouettes and fabrics.

One of the biggest strengths of this colour is how easy it is to style. A few thoughtful pieces can create an entire vacation wardrobe. Cloud Dancer is such a balanced neutral, it also layers beautifully with:

  • Natural straw accessories

  • Tan leather sandals

  • Indigo denim

  • Tropical prints

  • Soft pastel accents

A suitcase filled with easy, breathable pieces in this calming hue feels like an invitation to slow down — whether that’s a beach vacation, a cruise, or simply embracing summer closer to home.

Sand'n'Sea Boutique matches some of these styling ideas online, of course, and there is always more selection in our boutique in historic downtown Napanee.

New Fashion Trends for Resorts

It's time to think a little less about bundling up in the cold, a little more about sipping cocktails on deck and breezing through chic ports of call. Here’s how it could flow:

You’re standing on the deck of a sleek cruise liner, Aperol spritz in hand, the horizon glowing like a postcard. Or maybe you’ve just checked into a beach resort where the only decision you need to make is “pool or beach first?” That’s the mood for Resort 2025. It’s not just about what you’re wearing but where you’re going and how you’re living, it's the whole experience.

Jantzen Floral Palazzo Pants
Tropical Prints Get an Upgrade

Florals may be a resort cliché—but this year they’re bolder, brighter, and a little surreal. Think hibiscus explosions, oversized palm fronds, and tropical fruits splashed across swimwear, kaftans, oversize shirts, and breezy slip dresses. To ease into this trend, blend  with solid colours. Perfect for blending in with your cocktail umbrella.

Cruise-Core Chic

Nautical stripes and sailor-inspired tailoring are back, but elevated. Try crisp navy-and-white jumpsuits, wide-leg trousers with rope belts, and shirts that work as well on deck as in the yacht club lounge. Bikinis, tankinis and one pieces reflect a bolder stripe and clean colours. Cruise fashion is leaning classic but luxe.

Destination Dressing: Location-Inspired Looks

  • Mediterranean Ports → Linen sets, gold sandals, and soft draping, don't forget accessories.

  • Caribbean Hotspots → Bright crochet dresses, bold swimwear, and beach-to-dinner palazzo pants.

  • Asian Island Resorts → Kimono-inspired cover-ups, natural fabrics, and elegant resort tailoring.

Each destination is inspiring capsule wardrobes that feel curated for the backdrop.

Resort Trends 2025

Exuberant Silhouettes

  • Flowy Maxi Dresses – Easy, breezy, but with statement cut-outs or one-shoulder drapes to keep things spicy.

  • Wide-Leg Trousers – Resort dressing isn’t about skinny fits; it’s all about swishy, relaxed pants that look amazing with flat sandals and strappy heels. Flowy fabrics paired with tailored tops.

  • Matching Sets – Co-ordinatess are still having their moment. A printed crop top with matching wide-leg pants? You’ll look pulled together with zero effort.

Swimwear That Works Hard

2025 swim trends are doubling down on versatility. Reversible bikinis (yes, two looks in one), sporty surf-inspired one-pieces, and strapless bandeaus with detachable halters are big. Bonus: swim tops styled as daywear with high-waist trousers or skirts. Get more out of your carry on bag escape.

Day-to-Night Flexibility

Travel wardrobes are slimming down - carry on bags call for it —versatile pieces are everything. Imagine: a light maxi you wear over your bikini in the day, then swap to strappy heels and statement jewelry for a sunset dinner. Textured one pieces are on trend this year,  pair with flowy palazzo pants for an after dinner look. Minimal packing, maximum glam.

Color Story: Vacation Glow

The palette is joyful and beach ready: Ocean blues and seafoam greens for a fresh vibe. Sunset corals and tomato reds for passion and play. Soft metallics (yes, even in the day!) to catch that golden-hour light, from shimmering swimsuit fabrics to gem encrusted sandals, this year, take your style up a notch.

So when you’re packing, remember: one bold print, one easy neutral, something sheer, and a pair of wide-leg pants are your holy trinity.

Resort 2025 fashion is less about “bundling for winter escapes” and more about curating a globe-trotting wardrobe. It’s fun, bold, and destination-specific—think “Instagram reel ready” but also versatile enough to work across oceans, ports, and poolside lounges. Start with co-ordinates and add some jazz.

Resort Style for 2024

Travel to hot destinations calls you to be bold in your fashions, both in colour and style, and pack pieces that are comfortable and easily convert into multiple outfits. Popular trends that will boost your look this year include ...

1 style update for cruise and summer 2024
#1 Style Update for Resort and Summer 2024

Women's spring fashions embrace the elegant trouser for everyday, and the polazzo pant is our favorite update for your travel wardrobe. From semi-sheer chiffon fabrics for swimsuit coverups or a late night party, breathable krinkle fabrics for daytime, or classic linens, the styling options are endless.

Tailor your silhouette with a bikini, crop top or off the shoulder blouse, or layer with a cami and open kimono to take you from the beach to a wine tour or evening out. The elegant flow of a looser leg style is cooler to wear, paired with tops to define your waist, polazzo pants are the ultimate dress replacement. If your soul craves a boho look, layer with a loosely flowing top or one tied at the waist. Your options are endless.

Maxi Dresses and Coverups
#2 Maxi Cover-ups

Continuing to be the epitome of relaxation, maxi dresses range from casual styles to formal event dresses because you can always find one that flatters your shape. Still new to resort fashion is the maxi coverup, offering simple elegance over your swimsuit from flirty open front styles to dresses that you will wear again in the summer. Fabrics range from cool cottons or linens to softly flowing chiffon or jersey that remain wrinkle free.

Flirty Day Dresses
#3 Flirty Day Dress

Shorter summer dresses are not new, updated prints focus on florals from ditsy to bold tropicals or watercolour blends. Fresh colour combinations like sherbet and pale raspberry, soft yellow and navy, or glacier blue and pistachio will embody your relaxed spirit.

Cruise Colours
#4 Resort Dinner Plans

For dinner, update to fabrics with a soft sheen or solid colour like steel blue or go bold in white. If dresses aren't your favorite style try light flowing shorts with a pretty crop top. Either the dress or shorts can also double as a swimsuit coverup.

love stripes
#5 Love Stripes

On a final note - this year embrace stripes. From pinstripes, to bold colour blocking or flattering stripe placement, there is a style and colour to flatter everyoe. Pastels will take you from cruise season to spring, while navy continues to play a key role in cruise and summer fashions. Happy travel season :)

Finding your Perfect Shorts for 2023

This summer trend embraces shorts for their flexible styles, from denim jorts to bold prints or classic skorts - there is a style that will flatter your shape. Update, jorts are jean shorts, from the raw hem mini short to tailored bermuda length they signal the start of summer.

Denim Short Trends

For an easy cover-up over your skimpy bikini, or a casual look for the weekend, you can't go wrong with short-shorts. Easily paired with your favorite crop tee or oversize boyfriend shirt, you're weekend style will be off to a great start. These are a favorite for apple shape women, if you're closer to a pear shape, look for longer legs in a tailored bermuda style. Any of them will look great with a cozy sweatshirt at the evening campfire too.

When you love the look of a romper, but it doesn't just fit right, matching shorts and top will create the look while letting you get a custom fit. This is especially flattering for a pear shape woman, If you are an athletic shape pair a paperbag waist in a bold print with a halter or spagetti strap top to create the illusion of curves. Either way a bold print short will also continue to look great through several days of travel.

For a casual Friday business look, try a linen short or trouser style short paired with a blouse and blazer or soft summer knit. The looser leg will flatter every body shape, just shop for a flattering length.

Visit Sand'n'Sea Boutique to try on these summer trends, and discover the style that flatters you, you'll leave with a summer necessity that will pair with a lot of pieces already in your closet.

Revive your Spirit in Bold Choices for 2023

From Leatrice Eiseman (Executive Director, Pantone Color Institute) we learn the 2023 Colour of the Year is a shade rooted in nature descending from the red family and expressive of a new signal of strength. Viva Magenta is brave and fearless, and a pulsating color whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration, writing a new narrative.

Our New Years wish for you is to be inspired by Viva Magenta - galvanize your spirit, build your inner strength. and create a strong year for yourself.

From fashion to home decor you will be able to surround yourself with reminders to grow your spirit this year.

And a bold beginning will be followed by strong colour choices for Spring 2023, balanced by ultra-calm tints and tones from New York Fashion Week.

Mix between colors you may already have in your wardrobe (like a soft blue) and bold juicy colours -

Fiery Red, Beetroot Purple or an orange shade as vibrant as a juicy Tangelo or a sunflower-reminiscent shade of Empire Yellow.

Play with color to suit your individual taste, wear it head to toe, or just add a hint as your favorite accessory.

If these bold choices make you nervous, add the very classic colours to update your closet. After the nature inspired blues, look to -

Vanilla Cream, Grey Lilac or Macchiato to add balance. They are soft shades that are lively enough to bring a smile this spring.

2023 Cover-up Trends!

November marks the beginning of cruise and travel season for Canadians - we plan our escapes from winter to beach climates - sometimes just so that we can enjoy the snow on our return. Swimsuit cover-ups are an essential to pack, and picking one or two that double as clothing saves room in your carry on.

Most Popular Cover-up Trends

Both are easy to roll up and add to your carry-on bag, pick a print that will compliment at least two of your swimsuits for more styling options. Be sure to select a fabric that will drape well and breathe, open caftans are still trending over clothing in both short and maxi styles.

New trend Shorts or Pant Cover-ups

Just back from Punta Cana, and these are the second most popular styles we saw. Loose legs are never too warm, and can transition from beach coverup to a dinner basic very easily.

Classic Cover-up Styles
These classsics never go out of styles, and so are always stocked in a variety of fabrics, lengths and colours to be sure you can use them year after year. Happy packing!

Finding your Best Swim Bottom!

You're the most beautiful when you feel beautiful - so take these suggestions tongue in cheek, and wear whatever makes you happiest...

When you are wearing a bikini, tankini or onepiece, how a swimsuit leg cut is the most important consideration when looking for a flattering fit. Colours and patterns are second, but working towards a balanced look - for the top and bottom halves of the body to look proportioned, will always be the most flattering.

hourglass shape

Best bottoms for an hourglass. This silhouette is naturally proportional and balanced.

  • Your hips and shoulders are almost the same size.
  • You have rounder or sloping shoulders.
  • You have a clearly-defined waist.

Accentuate your clearly defined waist and great legs. Keep the style simple, from a skinny tie side to high cut leg, and in one-piece swimsuits try a wrapped  waist. The new belted bottoms will also look great. Keep colors similar across the bust and hips.

Pear shape body
Best bottom for a pear. With a clearly accentuated waist and a bust smaller than the hips, it's the second most common shape.

  • Your hips are wider than your shoulders.
  • You have round, sloping shoulders and a well-defined waist.
  • Your buttocks and thighs are full and round.

Overall your swimsuit needs to add volume to your upper body while keeping the bikini bottom simple, and emphasize your waist (creating balance). Keep bottom colours darker than the top. Higher cut legs will divide the size across your hips, minimizing them.

Apple Shape
Best bottoms for an apple or athletic build. The key is finding one that minimizes the attention to your tummy and hips.

  • Hips and shoulders have the same width; waist is the same width or wider.
  • Your lower legs and arms look slender.
  • You might appear short-waisted.

Bottoms should be darker, try tummy-control, ruched, and high-waisted.  Alternately a slight scoop under your belly. Patterned, ruffled, or embellished tops draw the eye to your face, and empire waists are your friend. Retro swimsuits with dark bottoms, ties or ruching help define your waist.

Wedge Body Shape

Best bottom for a wedge shape. Find a flattering swimsuit that accentuates your waist and optically balances the top and bottom.

  • You have strong and broad straight shoulders, wider than your waistline or hips.
  • You have an athletic build and rather flat buttocks.
  • You have an undefined waist.

To bring attention to small hips go for fuller coverage patterned bottoms, tulip-shaped skirts, or wide-leg swim shorts. Tie side bottoms with wider ties work well too. Lighter colours pull attention down, and balance with darker halter or triangle style tops. Tankini tops should flare over the hips.

How Men Wear Shorts & Look Great!

Your perfect answer to summer comfort in relaxed settings - these are definitely not business attire - but for the cottage, pool party, backyard BBQ or just meeting friends for drinks, you need to have them. But what style suits you best?

A tailored pair of shorts will define shape and create a flattering profile, they should feel comfortable and suit your body shape, without being too tight or restricting movement. Tailored doesn't always mean slim-fitting, just that everything needs to fit properly.

Lois 6" Cargo Short

Wearing shorts is about confidence and comfort -  shorter lengths are cooler so when this style works for you -  you can show some leg. If you’re a shorter man, be this bold, as the long and baggy styles will swamp you.

Length of shorts is about personal judgement but if your whole thighs are on show, even when perfectly toned, it's probably a little too short. Anywhere between two and six inches above the knee is the perfect length for a tailored pair of shorts.

Straight legs look best on a man whose hips are wider than shoulders with a bigger waist.

Slim Leg 10"inseam

Tailored is not skin tight (which would also almost guarantee you would feel uncomfortable, and self-conscious too). Fitted mid-length shorts are flattering on all body types, and Lois comfort waistband stretches while maintaining that tailored look.

A man that is tall and thin with a shoulder width that approximately matches hips is considered a rectangle or athletic shape. Their best look is a sleek flat front - baggy shorts don’t complement any body - slim legs, but still keep the fabric loose on the thighs.

Most golf shorts have these similar features, and pockets.

Lightweight Cargo Short
Cargo shorts are practical for many men, side pockets allow you to get your wallet out of the back pocket, but don't overstuff these pockets, and keep the length above the knee. Get your shorts hemmed if necessary.

While flattering on medium to tall men, still avoid a leg opening that is a lot wider than the circumference of your leg (that'll make legs appear smaller and thinner, again, not a flattering look). You don't need a great body to look great; you just need your clothes to fit.

For bigger guys, don't go for a roomier, baggy pair of shorts, rather than make you look thinner, they'll just make you look sloppy. Find a smaller pair instead, fitted but with enough room to move around in.

Mens trends have embraced shorts, wear them with confidence, barefeet and sandals, or a shoe with short ankle socks if necessary.

Swimsuits with Sleeves?

Beach House Sport w Bra Top
Have you seen these, they are becoming more and more popular!

Absolutely PERFECT for water sports and activities like snorkeling, stand up paddleboarding or kayaking because you spend long periods of time in direct sunlight surrounded by water that’s reflecting sunlight (most sunscreens need to be re-applied every 80 minutes to keep you protected, some more often).

A little off topic, but did you know that some sun screens are harmful for your skin? A FDA-led study released in January 2020 suggests we should all choose sunscreen with caution, though ... “Chemical sunscreen ingredients are systemically absorbed after one application, and some ingredients can stay in the blood for at least 3 weeks.”
Body Glove

The SunBum we love is on the good list, and in stock.

Back to long sleeve swim ... Unlike rash guards, they will not float up in the water, and they look great! They come in a great variety of colours and patterns, so there’s something to suit everyone. Not many come with bra liners, so you can also get the right size bikini top to wear underneath, especially important if your are more than a D cup.

Body Glove

Swimwear fabric long sleeved swimsuits offer options…
  • Zip up the front or the back
  • Thumb holes on the sleeves or not
  • Design of the suit - colour - pattern - cut outs
  • lastly check the UPF factor, all of ours are SPF30 or SPF50
While rash guards with SPF work well for some people, for others this is a better alternative :) and we stock lots of both!

Looking for Colour 2020

While we always love to add new colours to our wardrobe, this year I believe it's already there. Everyone loves Classic Blue, and it is the colour of the year for 2020!
I love this representation from the Inside Out blog, because although it's a colour that always looks fabulous head to toe, sometimes people don't know what to wear with it. Also note that Imogen has showcased the blues in warm or cool undertones, this is why everyone can wear it. Of course blue and white has been a classic combination for eons.

As we move from cruise season to spring, here are the rest of the season's hot new colours;

As Pantone indicates this season is " Friendly and relatable, a palette of colors that conveys a sense of ease ...  recognized favorites uses the familiar to take some unique twists and turns highlighting elements of humor, modernity and entertainment."

It's going to be a very pretty season. Check the new Cinnamon Stick for Canada Day, and for those that crave sunshine try the Saffron or Sunlight in your wardrobe.

Check the classics, navy has long been a softer alternative to black (because believe it or not,  some of us don't look great in black). White is always a summer staple, and I love the new additions of Lark and Ash.

I can vouch that we already have many of these colours in stock :)

Empowerment thru Colour

As you know, I love to explore the colour trends from season to season, and for Spring 2019 the Pantone Institute has delivered

"empowering colors that provide confidence and spirit; colors that are uplifting; joyful hues that lend themselves to playful expressionism". pantone.com/color-intelligence
Fiesta, Jester Red, Tumeric and Living Coral (which is also the colour of the year) are bold choices for hot weather - sprinkle them liberally throughout your wardrobe.

Wear them from top to bottom, or mix with white or eclipse navy.  Too much for you? Definitely use them to accessorize, from jewellery to purses or shoes,  absorb the power of these colours, which embody energy, passion, excitement and a rich elegance, reflect this confidence daily.

Not to forget - those shoes!

Don't forget to add them to your dining experience. From salsa and sangria, to a cool fruit salad, summer is the season to linger over food with great friends.

Bold serving pieces will call to family and guests ... imagine relaxing over good food, great friends and something cool to drink on a summer evening, it doesn't get any better.

If you crave pinks, there is the bold Pink Peacock or soft Sweet Lilac, and while there are beautiful olive greens in the lighter Pepper Stem and deeper Terrarium Moss, my favorite is Mango Mojito :)  not surprisingly this golden yellow "feeds our craving for pleasant comforts" and I love it on it's own or paired with denim for a casual look, dressed up with Eclipse for summer or charcoal grey for fall.

There are always carefully crafted neutrals to balance your life in, this season look for Soybean, Sweet Corn, midnight Eclipse and Brown Granite.  These are investment pieces and will carry you into the fall season, layered with sweaters, boots and scarves.
