The Carry-On Dilemma

see full article pg.7 ABM Fall 2014
Have you been the person struggling with their bags on the way to check-in at the airport?

For some people lists work, or packing bags earlier, allowing time to refine wardrobe selections. Inevitably, we forget something.
Hoping no one is watching? A spouse has, at one time or another, teased us about our deficiency at being able to “travel light.” Sound familiar?

Simple tips to help prepare you for the madness of packing for travel ...

  • consider your needs for planned excursions
  • pack pieces that can be used for dual purposes
  • use layers to alternate looks, over or under, and start with one basic colour family
  • add bright pops of colour in clothing, accessories or outer layers
  • you don't want to look back at your vacation pictures and realize you appeared the same in each one, for a week or more.
How about that carry-on bag? Can you maximize the capacity and minimize the awkward lugging around? Yes you can! Use a beach bag for your carry-on – it’s very light weight, flexible to fit in overhead compartments, and it’s not difficult to sling over your shoulder so you can handle the rest of the luggage!

Hot destination carry-on essentials (after prescriptions & toiletries & makeup in clear zip bags) should be enough to let you enjoy your vacation even if the luggage doesn't make it, plan for 48 hours minimum.

What to Include in that all-important carry-on bag:

  1. swimsuit or 2 minimum
  2. flexible day to evening dress (shorts or pants for him)
  3. jewelry or scarf to alternate look
  4. relaxation outfit (can double as sleepwear in a pinch)
  5. change of lingerie
  6. light sandals, wear the bulkiest shoes you need for your vacation activities to save space
  7. don’t forget some reading material or music to keep you occupied during flight delays.

Also keep your essentials list stored here off season, and if a last minute trip arises, you can pack with confidence. From lingerie to footwear plan carefully, because you don’t want to have blisters be the memory you take away from your vacation!

Do the prep work in your mind now (or make a list and save it) for your favorite vacation destination, and you can become a spontaneous traveler.
If you won a free trip to Bora Bora – what would you pack?
